Living Abroad and Writing Books: A Life Transformed by Authorship

For many of you, the journey from idea to manuscript can feel daunting and filled with self-doubt. In this heartfelt solo episode, I share personal insights and experiences from a life devoted to writing, coaching, and the pursuit of dreams. This post explores key takeaways from the episode, offering both encouragement and practical wisdom for anyone standing at the threshold of their own writing journey.

Embracing Courage: More Than Just a Career Shift

One of the most powerful messages I share is the courage it takes to step away from a comfortable career and into the unknown world of authorship. After 25 years as a teacher, principal, and professor, I made the daunting choice to write a book—a decision that catalyzed transformative changes, not just professionally but personally as well.

The greatest hurdle wasn’t the writing process itself, but rather the belief that my words had value, that my story mattered, and that readers would care. This leap of faith became the inertia needed to unlock a new chapter—proof that sometimes the hardest step is simply allowing myself to believe.

Writing as a Gateway to Reinvention

Authorhood isn’t just about published books; it’s about reinvention. I recount how writing my first book shifted personal perceptions, opening doors to opportunities that once seemed unimaginable—from coaching authors around the globe to living in places like Shanghai, Portugal, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

This bold move wasn’t without risk. Uprooting my life, family, and even my dogs to travel and work abroad required not just professional flexibility, but deep-rooted confidence in the possibility of starting anew. For me, writing proved to be the skill that transcended borders and anchored a new lifestyle, demonstrating that creative pursuits can indeed become passports to a fuller, more adventurous life.

Overcoming Doubt and the Statistics of Success

Self-doubt plagues many would-be writers. I underscore this by referencing the often-quoted New York Times statistic: while 81% of North Americans believe they have a book inside them, only 3% complete a manuscript, and an even smaller fraction publish.

The culprit? Perfectionism, procrastination, and an endless search for the “right moment” or “good enough” idea. Yet, the only time to write a book is now. The act of commitment—of putting words to page—shatters the illusion that tomorrow is the answer. It’s action, not idle dreaming, that separates authors from dreamers.

Creativity Has No Timetable

Creativity, according to my perspective, operates in seasons and carries no guarantees. It doesn’t promise financial windfalls or instant accolades. Instead, it invites us to leap, to step into an uncertain process with faith. The key is to embrace writing as both a path for self-actualization and a practice of letting go of control.

For those struggling through stuck phases, I recommend not succumbing to the rationalizations of busyness or perfectionism. The remedy is deceptively simple: keep writing, no matter what. Every word brings you closer to the life you want to create.

Living the Dream: Writing and Beyond

Today, my partner Steve and I continue our nomadic journey, working on our third book, guiding others, and savoring the freedom that writing has made possible. But this episode is more than a personal update; it’s a rallying cry.

There is no substitute for pursuing your dream—whether it’s writing or any other ambition. Time will pass regardless. What matters is choosing not to wait for “someday,” but to act now, harnessing the transformative power of a single, committed step.

If You’re Ready to Write

For those ready to take action, I invite you to download the free “Born to Write, Scared to Start” audio series. Use it as a friendly nudge: you don’t need permission, a perfect story, or the elusive right time. You just need to begin. Because, as I so movingly prove, everything changes when you do.
