Your Book Idea Is Already Leaving Clues

Most aspiring authors think they need to find the perfect book idea before they begin.

They wait for the topic to feel clear enough. They wonder if their story matters. They worry that someone else has already said what they want to say, or that they need more experience before they can begin.

But what if your book idea is not hiding somewhere outside of you?

What if it is already leaving clues?

Recently, I had a conversation with my friend Brooks Elms, who is a screenwriter and writing coach. Before we talked, he asked me to write down my ten favorite movies. At first, I thought it would just be a fun conversation about movies and why I loved them.

But as we started talking, I realized the list was not random.

Those movies revealed something deeper. They showed me the characters I root for, the themes I return to, and the questions I have been asking for most of my life.

That is often how a book begins.

Not because you suddenly find a perfect idea, but because you begin to recognize a pattern that has been there for a long time.

It may be in the stories you love. It may be in the conversations you keep having with clients or friends. It may be in the challenges you have lived through, the work you have chosen, or the things you notice that other people often miss.

When people come to write a book, they often think they need to look outside themselves for the idea. But sometimes, the message is already there. It has been showing up in their career, relationships, stories, failures, longings, and life choices.

Your book is not just a topic.

It is a way of seeing the world.

Two people can write about the same subject and produce completely different books because their viewpoints differ. Your perspective is what makes your book matter.

That is why clarity is so important. Before asking, “What is my book about?” it may be more helpful to consider why this message matters to you, whom you hope it will serve, and what you understand now that you did not before.

Your book may already be speaking to you.

The invitation is to pay attention.
