How Your Unique Story Shapes Your Book and Impact as an Author with Azul Terronez
In today’s world, where knowledge is abundant and AI can churn out answers in seconds, readers crave something deeper—authenticity.
On this episode of Authors Who Lead, I share lessons I’ve learned working with authors who want to lead with their story, not just their expertise. I reflect on my work with bestselling author and negotiation expert Kwame Christian to explore why embracing your uniqueness isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
The Secret Ingredient: Vulnerability in Leadership
The path to becoming a memorable author or leader isn’t paved with credentials alone. Authenticity is one of the most valued qualities people look for in those they follow. And yet, so many of us hide behind polished bios or professional knowledge, missing the chance to truly connect.
I’ve seen time and again: your story and your perspective are your superpowers.
When you share the truth—the messy, real parts of your journey—people listen. Not because you’re perfect, but because you’re relatable. Authenticity is magnetic.
Kwame Christian: A Case Study in Unique Voice
One author who embodies this is Kwame Christian, host of the Negotiate Anything Podcast and author of Finding Confidence in Conflict. When we start working together, I help Kwame dig into the real source of his skill as a negotiator. It doesn’t begin in law school—it starts as a kid, newly immigrated, facing rejection on the playground.
That story—“Nobody Will Play With Me”—becomes the emotional center of his book. It’s honest, vulnerable, and completely his own. I remind him that while many experts write about negotiation, only he can write from his lived experience.
You don’t have to be the biggest name to make the biggest impact. But you do have to double down on your story, your lens, and your voice. Otherwise, you’re just another voice in the crowd.
Message Over Words: What Really Sticks
A lot of aspiring authors get stuck trying to write perfectly. But I always say: I’d rather the message be right and the words be a little wrong than the other way around.
Think of it like a magnifying glass. When it catches the light just right, it focuses enough heat to start a fire. That’s what your perspective does. It brings intensity, focus, and power to the page. People don’t remember every sentence—they remember the shift they feel. That’s the kind of book that lasts.
Finding and Owning Your Unique Lens
Every one of us has a lens shaped by our life. Maybe you’re the first in your family to go to college. Maybe you’re someone who failed and started again. Those experiences define how you see the world.
And people are looking for someone who sees the world like they do.
If you’re not sure how to bring your voice forward, I invite you to join one of the Authors Who Lead programs. Through coaching and community, we help you find clarity, confidence, and the message that only you can write.
The Ripple Effect of Showing Up Authentically
My mission is simple: to help leaders tell their stories so they can make a real impact. I believe that when you show up honestly—as yourself—you spark transformation in others. That’s how change spreads. That’s how your story ripples out into the world.
So if you’re thinking about writing or stepping into leadership, remember: your story is your greatest asset. Don’t wait for it to be perfect. Just be real. Show up. Share it. That’s where your influence begins.
