Break Through the Blocks and Start Writing with Azul Terronez
Have you ever felt like you had a book inside you, but just couldn’t get started? 81% of North Americans believe they have a book in them—but only a tiny fraction ever see that dream to completion. In this episode, I explore the real reasons people don’t write their books, debunk common myths, and share actionable steps to help you finally move from wishing to writing.
The Reality Behind Why We Don’t Write
I share an eye-opening statistic: while nearly everyone has a story to tell, only 3% ever finish a manuscript, and an even smaller portion publish. It’s not for lack of ideas or writing ability. Rather, many of us carry beliefs instilled in us by school or society, such as the notion that books must be academic or that we have to follow rigid structures, which makes the process feel intimidating.
School teaches us to write to prompts, follow assignments, and get feedback from others. But as soon as we’re faced with the blank page and the freedom to write anything, most of us freeze. The real struggle isn’t the mechanics of writing; it’s the fear of freedom, and the beliefs we hold about who “gets” to be an author.
Debunking the “Where Do I Start?” Myth
One of the most common stumbling blocks I encounter is the belief: “I don’t know where to start.” But, as I point out, you already know what a book is—a string of words, organized in a beginning, middle, and end. The problem isn’t structure, but the inner voice that whispers, “Is this for me?” or “Am I good enough?”
I encourage aspiring writers to see this for what it is—an excuse, not a real barrier. Not knowing where to start is kind of illogical. If you can line up words to complete a thought, you can write a book. The real work is changing your beliefs about whether you belong in the author’s chair.
The Power of Your “Why”
So, how do you get started? I suggest beginning with your “why.” What is the deeper reason you want to write a book? Is it to change your career, leave a legacy, help others, or simply tell a story close to your heart?
Having a strong, personal why is what sustains you when things get tough. It’s not enough to aim for external rewards like bestseller status or a million copies sold, because those are ultimately outside your control. What you can control is your commitment to impact, meaning, or creative expression.
Start by writing down, in your own words, why you want to write this book. Let that passion carry you through the inevitable moments of doubt.
Picking the Right Idea—and Getting Unstuck
Another sticking point for many is not knowing which idea to pursue. My advice is simple: write the idea that won’t leave you alone—the one that gets your attention, not necessarily the one you “like” best. If you’re paralyzed by indecision, just pick one at random and begin. The act of starting is what matters most, not picking the “perfect” idea.
I note that writer’s block, fear, and overwhelming self-doubt are all “contrived and created within you.” By taking the smallest step—writing what’s in your heart, articulating your why, or simply jotting down the first thing that comes to mind—you can break the inertia and build real momentum.

Your Book Matters—But You Have to Begin
My final call to action is clear: don’t let fear or self-doubt steal years from your creative life. Take the first step, however small—your words matter, and your story deserves to be told. As I say, “Just don’t stop. Just don’t wait. Just don’t wonder about it.”
