148: I Get To’ Versus ‘I Have To’” with Alicia Dunams

Books Have Many Paths, So Choose Wisely

“‘I get to’ is the most powerful reframing tool I think that’s out there, because of its simplicity.” – Alicia Dunams

Alicia Dunams is an executive coach, entrepreneur and author who has coached thousands of leaders and experts from their initial ideas to published books — helping them share their messages, build businesses and connect with like-minded individuals.

During the 2008 recession, Alicia used those same tools on herself.

Shifting away from a one-to-one coaching method, she pivoted to a one-to-many model and launched what would become her signature course, “Best Seller in a Weekend.” During this time of hardship, she took the advice she gave to her clients by, first, selling the idea of her course and then creating a five-step formula that supported the program.

All it took was reframing her mindset — the pulse of her newest book, ““I Get To: How Using The Right Words Can Radically Transform Your Life, Relationships and Business,” which she discusses with me on this week’s new episode of “Authors Who Lead.”

Mindset Tools: The Power of Reframe

After coaching for over 15 years, and having written several books herself, Alicia has discovered many tools that help authors find their messages and confidence. The idea of “reframing your mindset” is at the core of her newest book.

In our interview, Alicia expressed just how important what we think and what we say is to our success in life and business. She stands by the concept of intentional communication for transformational results.

“The words we choose in our life will determine the results, will determine how we perceive life, will determine our behavior, our emotions, our thoughts,” she says.

The power of reframe can help take us from a “place of drudgery” to a place of gratitude. Alicia urges us to ask ourselves, “Is the issue we are facing happening to us? Or for us?” This small pivot in our mindset can help us honor all the experiences in our lives and not feel like a victim.

Honing In On Book Marketing

When an author clarifies their message and why it matters, they will find that it can become more than a way to build a business.

It can become a movement.

The mindset tools that Alicia outlines in her book will help an author not only find clarity and inspiration for writing, but it will also help with the success of marketing the book. When an author is clear about their reasons for marketing or becoming a bestselling author, it’s easier to find focus on the marketing efforts. There is no ceiling on marketing ideas and methods, but the marketing is more successful when it is focused on what the author wants to accomplish.

Using Connections to Spark a Movement

While writing or marketing your book, making connections with other authors is important for success. Just being an author has privileges and advantages that most people don’t have. Other authors will know that you’re committed to your message and are more likely to help spread your ideas and recommend your books. These relationships can help turn your message into a movement.

If you’re feeling hesitant in writing or marketing your book, keep in mind my three takeaways from my conversation with Alicia:

  1. As an author creating a movement, it is important that you are willing to talk about and market your book.
  2. Marketing a book has many paths. Be clear about your end goal and focus all your effort on that.
  3. When thinking about your success in life and business, be prepared to reframe your language. Concentrate on the things that matter, not the things that don’t.

What was your biggest takeaway from the episode? Are there ways you can reframe your mindset to become more successful in your life or business? Share your ideas in the comments below!

That’s all for this week. If you have a message inside of you that needs to be written, start by reframing your mindset. Don’t delay – find your focus and work toward that goal!
